n8n (pronounced “n-eight-n”) is an open-source workflow automation platform built around a visual node graph. Each node represents an app, API call, transformation, or conditional — you wire them together to build automations without hand-writing integration code.
What makes n8n different
Unlike SaaS automation tools like Zapier or Make, n8n can be self-hosted — meaning your data never leaves your infrastructure. This is the main reason ops teams, agencies, and companies with data-sensitivity requirements choose it.
Key differences from competitors:
- Self-hostable — Docker or npm install, runs on your VPS
- Code when needed — Function nodes accept JavaScript or Python for logic that visual nodes can’t express
- No per-task pricing — self-hosted n8n has no execution limits
- Active open-source community — 400+ built-in integrations, more via HTTP request
Common use cases
- CRM and lead routing automation
- Syncing data between internal tools
- Webhook-triggered pipelines
- Automated reporting and notifications
- AI-powered data processing with LLM nodes
FAQ
- What is n8n used for?
- n8n is used to automate repetitive tasks between apps and APIs — for example, sending a Slack notification when a new row appears in Google Sheets, or routing leads from a form to a CRM. It supports 400+ native integrations and unlimited custom integrations via HTTP Request nodes. It runs as a self-hosted or cloud service. According to n8n's 2024 data, over 50,000 active organisations use n8n globally.
- Is n8n free?
- n8n is open-source and free to self-host with no usage limits. A paid cloud plan is available starting at around $20/month. Self-hosting on a $5/month VPS gives full control and no per-execution costs — making it significantly cheaper than Zapier or Make at scale.
- Is n8n better than Zapier?
- n8n is better than Zapier for technical teams that need self-hosting, complex logic, or high task volumes without per-execution costs. In a 2023 G2 comparison, n8n scored higher on flexibility and value for money, while Zapier scored higher on ease of use. n8n suits technical teams; Zapier suits non-technical users who prioritise speed over control.
